Miss California
The uproar over Miss California's answer to Perez Hilton's question is not unexpected, given the venue. After looking at the comments on Hilton's website, there seems to be a 3 way split on the issue. 1/3 are for gay marriage, 1/3 are against, and 1/3 think she is stupid. What I noticed the most was that over half of them can't spell! The pageant is not the place to ask a controversial question like that if you don't get an honest answer or if the honest answer causes you to lose the contest. This wasn't a political race where the winner has actual power over us. It's a damn beauty contest! Should she have lied just to win? We as a country need to stop the subservient ass kissing and vote our convictions, right or wrong. We are where we are now because we are just told what we want to hear and not always the truth. Do you think we would be in Iraq if Bush had said "I want to start a war with a country that I have no real proof of wrongdoing and oh yeah it will last 8-10 yrs and cost us billions"? I would hope someone would have popped up and said "bitch pleeeeze!" instead of kissing his ass and going along with it for the sake of not creating controversy.

Disclaimer: I think Perez Hilton is a nutjob
ReplyDeleteI think it was a valid question considering the number of states addressing the issue of same sex marriage. I don’t think she’s an idiot for speaking her conscience, I think she’s an idiot the way she is handling coming in 2nd to Miss North Carolina. The first runner-up going on national TV to say she should have been the winner doesn’t exactly represent the ladylike image of these shows.
Interesting on the spelling – I was looking at the comments on a story about the “controversy” on Topix. It brought out all the anti-same sex marriage folks and there was some really bad spelling and grammar. I haven’t looked at Perez Hilton’s site in a long time but I think lack of spelling & grammar skills is a requirement for participation.
Thanks Rob, now I’m wanting to watch “Miss Congeniality” again.
Here is an interesting perspective from one of the other judges, Alicia Jacobs. Jacobs is a past Miss Nevada now a journalist.
ReplyDelete"Please understand, that as a journalist, I am passionate about freedom of speech, however, I am also passionate about the importance of compassion & humanity, & that we should ALL have the right to love & share our lives with WHOMEVER we chose. If Carrie Prejean is against gay marriage, she certainly has that right, but, if it was her intention to be MISS USA (and I think it was) why not answer that question with diplomacy & heart? Sometimes, (pageants & politics, to name a few) we have to be mindful of using a platform in a hurtful way, like international television (The Miss USA PAGEANT was seen by over 7 million viewers in the U.S. alone, & in at least 121 different countries) Yes, Miss USA should be beautiful, be physically fit, & look great in a swimsuit, she also has to be able to think on her feet & answer any question thrown at her in an articulate & non-offensive manner. Outwardly, Miss California was wonderfully prepared, & in many ways, she looked the part of Miss USA. It has occurred to me that the all-knowing power of the Universe took over the final 15 minutes of the Miss USA telecast. What were the odds that Perez Hilton, an openly gay man would have his name randomly selected by Miss California? Thank goodness, or thank the universe for this occurrence…how horrible if Miss California USA's lack of good judgment had not been disclosed until it was too late? Maybe it's true, & maybe everything really does happen for a reason. It is my opinion that MISS USA must have social grace…Miss California USA does not."
It cracks me up when people ask a question with a preconceived notion of the answer they want to receive and then they don't get what they expected. How does the saying go? Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer. It's fine to ask the question. But don't get all bent out of shape if the answer isn't the one you wanted.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the spelling issue, it seems to be pretty widespread. MSN had an article last week about actresses in action movies. It stated that "they repel down mountains". Which immediately made me imagine big fluffy mountains being flung left and right as Angelina Jolie runs through a valley. Maybe they had to lay off their proofreaders.
Not too surprised at Sue's choice of actress in her image. I think that Miss Jacobs put it in a nutshell. Anyone has the right to their feelings and opinions, but Miss USA is a promotional position at best, not a political venue out to change laws and influence public opinion. Kind of like talking about religion. In polite conversation one only talks about the weather! And speaking of being polite, just was talking to Sara D. and we were talking about the lack of manners in today's world. Like the guy next door not having enough respect for the lady (moi) next door who is just about old enough to be his grandmother, to put a shirt on if he is going to insist on coming over to talk! Or using terms of respect like, yes sir, yes ma'am, even please and thank-you! Fortunately, for the most part, I have managed to train my landlords and neighbors to use Mrs. when talking to me! Ms. is fine too. Just not my first name, when you do not even know me. Same with the telephone. Companies call, unsolicited, and use my first name. NOT! Okay, got off the original theme. Will climb down off the soapbox for now.
ReplyDeleteI had not seen the actual footage of her FULL response until this morning's news. Nor did I know she lists her career as a "motivational speaker". I guess she is motivating a lot of speech. LOL!
ReplyDeleteI found a transcript online. I can see why people are saying she started out ok but didn't know when to stop talking (a skill I think would be important for a "motivational speaker").
"Well, I think it's great that Americans are able to choose one or another. Um, we live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage."
**This is where she should have stopped talking**
"And, you know what? In my country and in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman."
I think I can see why she got booed by the audience.
